Five-Card Omaha: Rules and Key Features

Basic Rules
5 Card Omaha is a variation of classic Omaha poker, where each player is dealt five pocket cards, and five community cards are revealed on the board.

The Key Rule: a player must form their hand using exactly two pocket cards and three community cards. Learn more about the hierarchy of poker hands.

Types of 5 Card Omaha

  • Pot-Limit Omaha: The maximum bet is capped at the size of the pot. This creates a tense and strategically deep gameplay. It's one of the most popular formats.
  • No-Limit Omaha: There are no limits on bets, allowing for bold bluffs and decisive moves.

How to Play 5 Card Omaha?
In pot-limit 5 Card Omaha, games vary by blind size (e.g., in a $1/$2 game, the small blind is $1, and the big blind is $2). Each player is dealt five pocket cards, and betting action moves clockwise around the table, starting with the player to the left of the big blind.

How Does the Game Progress?

  1. Preflop: Each player is dealt five pocket cards. The first betting round begins.
  2. Flop: Three community cards are revealed on the board, followed by the second betting round.
  3. Turn: A fourth community card is added to the board, leading to the third betting round.
  4. River: The fifth and final community card is revealed, followed by the final betting round.
  5. Showdown: Players reveal their hands, and the best combination wins. A valid hand must consist of exactly two pocket cards and three community cards.

Betting Rules in Pot-Limit and No-Limit 5 Card Omaha

The rules for pot-limit and no-limit 5 Card Omaha are similar, with some distinctions:

Pot-Limit Omaha

  • Minimum bet is equal to the big blind.
  • Minimum raise must be at least the size of the previous bet or raise.
  • Maximum raise is equal to the size of the pot.
  • There are unlimited raises in 5 Card Pot-Limit Omaha.

Example of a Minimum Raise:

If a player bets $5, the next player must raise at least $5 (total bet $10) or more, as long as it does not exceed the pot size.

  • Raise to $400 (call $100 + add $300 for the raise).

No-Limit Omaha

  • Minimum bet is equal to the big blind.
  • Minimum raise must be at least the size of the previous bet or raise.
  • Maximum bet is the player’s entire stack.
  • There are unlimited raises in 5 Card No-Limit Omaha.
